About The Clinic
- The University of New Mexico Speech and Language Hearing Center provides speech, language, and hearing services to individuals across the lifespan while serving as a clinical training site for graduate students in the Master of Science program in Speech and Hearing Sciences. Graduate student clinicians, under the supervision of licensed and certified speech language pathologists, provide evidence-based assessment and treatment services.
- The clinic operates according to the University of New Mexico academic calendar and is closed during university breaks and other periods when classes are not in session.
- Because the clinic is a student-training facility, a referral does not guarantee an appointment or placement. Acceptance and scheduling are based on factors such as student training needs, required clinical experiences, clinical instructor availability, caseload capacity, and the clinic's ability to appropriately meet an individual's needs.
- Referrals are carefully reviewed to ensure they align with both client needs and educational requirements. If the clinic is unable to provide services, individuals may be referred to other appropriate community resources when available.
- At the UNMSLHC, clients include all age groups, from infants to older adults. The center provides a range of services including accent addition modification, aphasia, apraxia of speech, articulation, aural rehabilitation, autism spectrum disorders, brain injury rehabilitation, dysarthria due to a variety of neurological disorders, dysphagia/swallowing, language delay, social pragmatic skills, stuttering, voice, and voice and communication therapy for clients who are transgender (when available).
- The security and privacy of clinical records is protected by professional ethics (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association) and federal legislation (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act-HIPAA). The UNM Speech-Language-Hearing Center is bound by ethics and law to adhere to HIPAA Policies and Practices. All members of the UNM Speech and Hearing Sciences Department must comply with HIPAA Policies and Practices. Reporting of information loss is to be filed using the incident report/information loss form.
- The UNM Speech-Language-Hearing Center adheres to the UNM policy regarding equal opportunity, which forbids unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, physical or mental disability, age, sex, sexual preference, ancestry, veteran status, genetic information or medical condition.
- Culturally and Linguistically appropriate services are provided. Our clinic provides services to bilingual clients of all ages.
